In a statement released on Sunday morning, KMD said the system, currently located about 500 kilometres north of Madagascar, continues to lose strength as it drifts westward across the northern Mozambique Channel.

The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued a weather advisory warning of heavy rainfall and strong winds along the southern coastal regions as a weakening low-pressure system named “CHENGE” moves across the southwest Indian Ocean.

In a statement released on Sunday morning, KMD said the system, currently located about 500 kilometres north of Madagascar, continues to lose strength as it drifts westward across the northern Mozambique Channel.

Despite its weakening, the department cautioned that CHENGE’s proximity to the East African coast could still influence local weather patterns early in the week.

“CHENGE, a weakening system over the southwest Indian Ocean, is moving west at 11 kilometres per hour with winds of 55 kilometres per hour and gusts of up to 75 kilometres per hour,” the department said.

“It is expected to dissipate near the Tanzania–Kenya coast by Tuesday.”

KMD warned that parts of the country are likely to experience heavy rainfall, with the southern coastal areas, including Kwale and parts of Kilifi counties, expected to experience strong winds exceeding 25 knots on Monday and Tuesday.

Residents in the affected areas have been urged to remain alert, monitor official weather updates, and take necessary precautions to safeguard lives and property.

The department also advised those involved in marine activities to be particularly cautious due to the risk of rough seas and strong winds.

“The public, especially in coastal regions, should exercise caution and stay informed through official KMD updates,” the statement added.

“Preparedness and awareness are key as the system continues to move closer to the coast.”

KMD further noted that the rains associated with CHENGE may enhance ongoing rainfall over parts of southeastern and central Kenya, potentially affecting transport and local livelihoods.

The department assured Kenyans that it will continue to monitor the situation closely and issue updates as necessary.

The advisory comes amid the ongoing short rains season, which typically runs from October to December and often brings heavy downpours to parts of the country.
